A Proud Long Island Farm, Fifty Years Strong

Grown on Long Island.
Closer than farm to table.

The Nolan family has farmed the East End of Long Island for over half a century — still family-owned, still hands-on. Their vegetables travel just miles from the field to the market, making Deer Run one of the most genuinely local farms in the Northeast.

Their relationship with Nathel & Nathel is rooted in the same values: a commitment to fresh, great-tasting produce and a deep respect for the land and the people it feeds.

Before farm-to-table had a hashtag, the Nolan family was already doing it. Deer Run Farms sits on the East End of Long Island, in Brookhaven — close enough to New York City that vegetables picked at dawn can reach a table in the Bronx before dinner. For over fifty years, the Nolans have farmed this land with the kind of quiet commitment that doesn't make headlines: planting in the cold, harvesting through the heat, doing the work season after season.

The farm grows what the region needs most: cabbage, carrots, lettuce, kale, and sweet corn — staples that feed real people in real kitchens. Their approach is simple and deliberate. Pay attention to the soil. Pick at the right time. Get it there fresh. In an era when "local" has become a marketing term, Deer Run is the straightforward version: a family, their land, and vegetables grown a short drive from where they're sold.

Their partnership with Nathel & Nathel, which began in 2010, is grounded in exactly that shared conviction. When both sides of a relationship believe that local produce deserves more care than a commodity, the work shows. What comes off the Deer Run truck isn't just vegetables — it's the result of a family paying attention, season after season, to what good farming actually requires.

"Our partnership with Nathel & Nathel has been built on their genuine commitment to supporting locally grown, sustainable produce."

Long Island's farm economy has shrunk considerably over the decades — land values rise, families sell, and fields become subdivisions. The Nolans have stayed. That says something about the land, about the family, and about why the vegetables that come off Deer Run Farms carry a little more meaning than most.
